Green thumb blues

I’m disenchanted with my container garden right now. Of my two containers, one completely failed, taking out two Dixie Chip Ajuga and one Electric Blue Beard Tongue with it. I accidentally bought a full-sun plant and it was the first to go, being that my containers get anywhere between zero and zero hours of sunlight [...]

Squirrels in the garden

My newly planted shade garden is lovely. I picked out some good choices for the location and they really fill out the containers they’re in quite nicely. When sitting on the porch, I’m able to enjoy the contrast in color the greens, pinks and whites make against the brick wall. The garden is in fact [...]

Vermicomposting

Back in March, I set up a vermicomposting operation. Vermi is Latin for worm, and vermicomposting is composting with worms. More specifically, red worms, or Eisenia foetida. In hindsight, I probably started this as difficult as possible. I went to a bait store and bought about 100 worms for a fairly hefty price. I was [...]

Shade garden

As you may recall, my vegetable garden did not do so well. The plants were staying alive but were not getting enough sun to really take off and fruit. So I cut my losses and decided to try again, this time with some shade tolerant foliage, since the only daylight my plants get is a [...]

Stick a Fork In It

Stick a fork in it, I’m done. I recently decided to abandon my dreams of becoming a vegetable gardener using the tiny space on my porch that I have. I faced a number of obstacles – space, lack of sunlight, lack of knowledge. I am keeping my hanging tomato and pepper plants going, though! [...]

Does it really do that?

I should have done a before post on this topic, but I’ll do my best without! I’m sure you’ve seen them in on television or on store shelves. You’ve been wowed by their suspiciously amazing advertising with claims of reduced pests and a hands off approach. Yes, you can grow tomatoes and other plants upside [...]

First harvest

Remember a couple months ago when I first posted about my container garden? Things have changed quite a bit! And you should see it now.

Last night I had my first harvest from the garden! It wasn’t much, but I picked some spinach and trimmed the shallot greens to add to dinner. I ended up having [...]

Not Yet!

Some warmer weather is finally moving in, bringing with it much needed rain. Unfortunately for my little patio garden, rain water doesn’t quite reach it. So I’ve been giving it daily waterings and it’s starting to reward me with a visual feast, if not a readily edible one. Remember the garlic photo I posted recently? [...]

Garden Update

I went out to water my garden last night and was pleasantly surprised by my garlic patch:

It’s not much. I’ve had garlic do this to me sitting on the counter even. But it’s a start and I’m pleased.

Vegetable Garden

This weekend I finally did it. I gave my green thumb a shot, and in the process my hands acquired a lovely shade of dirt brown. It really didn’t take much time, but I spread the process out over the whole weekend. On Saturday, Ricky and I hit up the Anne Arundel County Farmers Co [...]
